Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered a 7-1 away defeat at the hands of Sikh Union on Saturday in the final friendly before the league commences on Saturday.  Town took a strong squad to Coventry but faced a strong Sikh Union outfit and although Cameron Hancox had a good opportunity early on Tamworth fell behind to 3 early goals whilst trialling a new formation.  Tamworth regrouped at this point and although the hosts dominated possession and territory Tamworth grew into the game making better use ball and were unlucky not to get a goal back with Tom Sperrink denied with 2 deflected efforts from close range and Ryan Brisco seeing a snap shot on the turn saved by the home keeper.

After the break Tamworth kept the ball better with Ben Acheson and Dave Langford putting in excellent performances in defence to keep the score down when Sikh Union attacked.  As the game wore on home sides superior movement opened up Tamworth and although Simon Carey made a string of excellent saves, with tired legs playing a factor Union added 4 more goals for a convincing victory.  Tamworth still managed to create a handful of scoring opportunities, Tom Sperrink scored on the breakaway with a drilled shot inside the near post and Ollie Meldoni was inches away with a diving effort late on but Town know that they will need to take stock of where mistakes were made in order to prepare for the game at Market Harborough this week.

Despite the defeat Town go into the new season in a good position with a strong squad with greater depth than in recent seasons and having convincingly beaten Market Drayton 4-2 in the previous weeks friendly there are plenty of positives going into the new season.
