Match Report

Tamworth Men’s Firsts came flying out of the blocks in the first game of the New Year, producing their best team performance of the season.  Initially enjoying long spells of possession inside Wednesbury’s half the pressure told when Herring pushed out a re-taken short corner for Sperrink to fire low past the keeper.  Tamworth’s organisation meant Wednesbury had no outlet from the back and the discipline and hard-work told when Hancox pounced on a loose pass in defence and coolly slipped the ball into the bottom right corner when one-on-one.  Given the close proximity in the league it was inevitable Wednesbury would have a spell and this came towards the end of the first half and they reduced the deficit with a reverse stick shot.

The second half saw the game become more spread and play flowed from end-to-end, however levels of concentration were maintained by the Tamworth defence and the back four of Jones, Langford, Acheson and Moore gave little opportunity away.  Midway through the half Tamworth restored the two-goal cushion when Wagstaff showed great awareness at the top of the D to play in Sperrink for a simple finish at the far post.  Further chances followed with Hancox denied by a last ditch block and Herring unlucky not to convert a Wagstaff through ball, but in summary, a very important 3 points and a great foundation to mount a push for promotion in the following weeks.
