Tamworth 1stXI enjoyed a six point haul this weekend to take them top of West Midlands Division 1.

Tamworth visited Stafford for a match in which both teams needed three points, with Tamworth challenging for promotion and Stafford attempting to avoid relegation.  Tamworth started the game at a great tempo as they produced early chances which were well saved by home ‘keeper.  When the deadlock was broken it was following an incisive run down the left by Briscoand his pass across goal found Martin to push home a simple finish.  Further pressure brought a second this time Sperrink converting a short corner with a straight strike beyond the ‘keeper and the defender on the line.

In the second half Stafford threw caution to the wind pushing more bodies forward and Goode and Langford in defence had to absorb a period of pressure before Tamworth extended the lead with a large slice of fortune as Sperrink rounded the keeper only to see a loose touch turned into the empty net by an opposing defender.  Tamworth added a fourth when Wagstaff fired home with a slick drag flick to the top left hand corner.  Stafford pulled a goal back late on which was a disappointment as ‘keeper Pipe and the defence fully deserved a clean sheet for their performance
