Match Report

Tamworth ladies 1st team have secured their place in midlands division 2 for next season.

Tamworth all season have fought hard and played some great hockey but always coming away majority of games with a loss by just the one goal. The last game of the season was the crunch game v Kettering a draw would have secured their place but this was not to be, Tamworth saw themselves in the playoffs against Loughborough town and Birmingham uni 4ths who finished 3rd in the two conference leagues below.

On Saturday Tamworth traveled to stourport hockey club. The commitment from players throughout the club to come and be part of the squad was second to none. Players travelled miles and arranged childcare to be there and give Tamworth the best possible chance to stay in this league. The game between Loughborough and Birmingham uni ended in a draw so went to flicks where Loughborough won. Our first game was against Loughborough where Tamworth had the majority of possession and took the lead through open play and the goal being scored by Gemma Rowe. They equalised through a short corner deflection from a defender to make it 1-1 at the final whistle. Flicks it was. Gemma Rowe, Michelle McManus, Claire Miles, Fiona and Tara Wylie. Connie wain our goal keeper making great saves - all square and it goes to sudden death Tamworth win on the 10th flick put away confidentially by 14 year old Tara Wylie.

This is where it gets interesting the question was asked if Birmingham Uni beat Tamworth where does the decision lie as all teams would have won one!!?? Later get informed that the format of the day had been played wrong Loughborough should have played Birmingham uni and then the winner of that game should have played Tamworth so the answer was if Birmingham win we are all going to have to meet up after the Easter holidays and play the above format. However Tamworth definitely did not want that to happen so on with the second full game of the day against Birmingham Uni.

Tamworth passed the ball well, worked hard for each other and the Adrenalin kept us all motivated and fighting strong. The winning goal came from open play Alex Gayton passing the ball to Gemma who fired it home. Everyone gave 110% and remained focused throughout the 140 minutes of hockey played.

A massive thank you to everyone that came and supported us it was very much appreciated and helped us to secure our position for next season
