Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered their first defeat of the season losing 6-4 after travelling to Aldridge & Walsall.  Despite missing some key personnel Tamworth had started brightly and took a deserved lead when Tom Hancox reacted quickest to fire a loose ball into the net.  Aldridge bounced back with two quick fire goals from a controversial deflected long ball into the D and a slick short corner routine.  Tamworth restored parity before half time when Tom Sperrink’s speculative reverse stick shot was calamitously missed by the ‘keeper.

In the second half the home team continued to have the rub of the green with umpiring decisions when a deflected goal by Tom Hancox was disallowed only for Aldridge to score a deflected effort of their own.  Jez Holloway did get Tamworth back on level terms when he picked up a rebound and slotted home but strikes from 2 short corners and a penalty flick for Aldridge put the game beyond Tamworth.  The visiting side rallied and captain Ian Wagstaff smashed in on the turn after Ryan Brisco had set him up to make the game 6-4 but time ran out on the comeback.

Tamworth will be buoyed by performance, especially from full backs Brisco and debutant Ollie Wawrzynczyk but disappointed not to have taken something from a tightly fought contest.
