Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI were knocked out in the first round of the National Trophy by Melton 3-2 in a keenly fought contest.  Tamworth’s pre match talk had focused on improving teamwork, discipline and cutting out the early mistakes which had cost them in recent games, and this was put into action with a bright start from the hosts.  With the game flowing from end to end Melton enjoyed greater possession but Tamworth had the better chances and when Tom Hancox had his shot saved the deflection off the stranded ‘keeper fell to Ian Wagstaff to open the scoring.  Melton hit back immediately with a well worked short corner routine to take the game into half time all square.

After the break Melton made the better start and scored twice to put them in control.  Tony Banks made some crucial saves to keep Town in the game and eventually Tamworth cranked up the pressure with Ryan Brisco cutting the difference in half with a smartly taken reverse stick shot.  Tamworth continued to press and were camped in Melton’s half in the final minutes but tried in vain as they couldn’t find the equaliser.
