Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI came agonisingly close to securing three points at home to Shrewsbury on Saturday, but had to settle for one following a 2-2 draw.  The match had started at a good pace as both teams looked to move the ball around quickly.  The visitors grabbed the opener however as they capitalised on a sustained period of pressure.  Tamworth responded well and equalised when Ben Acheson fired a shot in from the top of the D and Tom Sperrink flicked in the rebound.  Shrewsbury came back on the attack but a lightening quick counter attacking move saw Tamworth take a lead into half time.  Graeme Cook started the move from left back which saw Tom Hancox released down the right wing and he rounded the keeper before cutting the ball back to Sperrink to score his second.

The second half was a far more tentative affair.  Shrewsbury allowed Tamworth to have long periods of possession at the back but they were looking to pounce on any mistake.  This meant that there was little space to work in attacking areas and Tamworth’s only real chance came from a short corner.  Shrewsbury however piled on the pressure, particularly as Tamworth found themselves down to nine men with two players in the sin bin, but Mike Pipe in goal and centre backs Dave Langford and Ben Acheson kept them at bay for much of the second half.  Tamworth weren’t able to hold on however as a succession of short corners were repelled only for Shrewsbury to score with the final hit of the game.
