Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI opened the season with a 3-2 away win against Leamington, in which the scoreline could have and should have seen more goals for both teams.  Leamington started the match the stronger side and pinned Tamworth back in their half as the defence had to withstand the early pressure.  Fortunately Tamworth look the lead with their first chance of the game as they broke away and debutant Tom Grimshaw played in Ryan Brisco who took one touch to round the keeper and flick the ball in from an almost impossible angle.  Leamington continued to press and equalised when their left winger saw his shot saved but scored at the second attempt.  Tamworth grew stronger as the half wore on and went into the break on the offensive.

In the second half Tamworth continued where they left off and when a clearance from deep took a deflection it fell into the path of Tom Sperrink who beat the keeper and restored the visitors lead.  Tamworth doubled their lead midway through the half when Tom Hancox drove in from the right D and drilled his shot inside the far post.  Tamworth went down to ten men as Nick Martin received a yellow card for obstruction and this was the cue for Leamington to throw caution to the wind and they pushed forward which saw chances at both ends.  Although Leamington cut the deficit to one goal with a short corner, Tamworth were indebted to man of the match Tony Banks in goal who pulled off a string of saves throughout the match to ensure a winning start.
